3M SmartLens Safety Glasses with Photochromic Lens
Changing outdoor light conditions doesn't require changing eyewear anymore. SmartLens does all the changing automatically. The lens is "UV reactive", so it responds to the amount of Ultraviolet (UV) light it receives. It lightens or darkens as needed...going from clear to gray in just seconds. Why spend the money to buy multiple pairs of eyewear?
Changes from dark to clear in about 35 seconds (clear state allows 77.5% light transmission). Changes from clear to gray in 8 seconds (reduces sun glare allowing just 22% light transmission). Note: SmartLens' 22% VLT in its darkened state may be considered a medium gray, and not as dark as some might require in bright sunlight. Typical dark gray lenses allow only 10-16% light transmission. Compliance: ANSI Z87.1-2010 certified. Meets traffic signal recognition requirements of ANSI Z80.3. Safety directors should assess their particular workplace and make all SmartLens wearers aware of the time required for the lens transition. Special care should be taken when moving from outdoors to indoors. Outdoor temperatures may affect lens transition time. Not as dark as I would like, but I can live with it. I am in and out of the shop so often that it is not practical to change glasses. These have worked well for me. I will say the disappointing thing was that they really work well in cool weather, but not so much in the heat. It has a reasonable price. You can adjust temple and nosepiece by yourself. Great!! Sometime it’s not dark as we needed but it depends by UV light not real light. But function well. Meah ... better than nothing I suppose. But I wish they could have had the warning back when WE bought ours. Anyway - we're still looking for TRUE, DARKENING safety glasses. If these WERE what we'd hoped for, then the busy/checkered designed wouldn't have been so "over the top" either. There is no warranty of satisfaction, so we'll just have to make due. They transition nicely & are very comfortable to wear. The rubber on the nose piece after wearing for a few weeks start coming off easily. The lenses are of good quality and there is no distortion of vision. These safety glasses are nice enough in appearance that they could be worn for every day sun glasses and would also, be excellent for motorcycle riding. I would have given these safety glasses 5 stars if they had been Made In The USA instead of Taiwan. 3M SmartLens Safety Glasses with Photochromic LensEricJuly 1, 2008I ordered these hoping not to carry 2 pair of safety glasses. They darken quickly but don't seem to block 78% of the light as specified. I still find myself squinting when working around light colored exterior walls or in direct sun. They are put together well and seem to be very durable. The nose piece is comfortable and does not cut in the bridge of my nose like safety glasses with out one. Not a bad deal for around 40 bucks since other brands of photocromic glasses sell for $80 or more.
